#002 | Sun-kissed
So I spent some time in the sun recently.
Which used to be a daily thing. Spent the non-Japan half of my childhood surrounded by coconuts and 80+ degree weather.
I hardly dealt with snow for years. Didn’t get much of it in Yokosuka. I think I saw a kid make a foot-tall snowman once. Pretty sure he was using ice from his freezer though.
Then I moved to New York. Those last few weeks of summer, just as the school year began, always gave off this false sense of wonder.
“Look at all the people smiling!”
But it’s really just the calm before the storm, as the bitter, not-so-chill season slowly drains the color out of the jungle.
After tolerating that for a few years, I was desperate to reconnect with my 2nd favorite thing in the world after soccer, so I spent a few months in Australia. A triumphant return to that t-shirt weather.
Something about great weather just makes everything that much more exciting. It gets you wanting to eat, drink, walk, even pay bills outside. Think of how many people want to sit on the ground when the temperature is just right.
When it's warm enough for outdoor seating, I just wanna take it all in.
Which is why stopping in South Florida recently was a Win (x3). Humidity and Cuban food?! Shiiit. Can’t believe this place is gonna be underwater in a few months…
But that humidly-warm-hot weather is also why I bought a colada and drank it like it was an espresso. The euphoria of being in a place where the sun is actually doing its job… it just melted a few brain cells. Nothing like being sleep deprived but jazzed the F up from $2 coffee while watching the Champions League Quarterfinals.
For now, I’ll just wait for regular summer, before I spend the following 9 months tryna remember what insolation feels like.
